Marvel Heroes (Review)

I have significantly updated my thoughts on this game as of November 2014. Click this link for my second review of Marvel Heroes.

When it comes to gaming, there’s one genre that always suckers me in no matter what and that is the action RPG genre. We’ve received some real gems over time such as Diablo II and Torchlight and, in recent years, the genre has seen a bit of a revival as several noteworthy action RPGs entered development. The four big ones for the last few years have been Diablo III, Path of Exile, Torchlight II, and this very game. Marvel Heroes. Developed by Diablo creator David Brevik, along with many former Blizzard North developers, you’d think that this would be a pretty difficult game to mess up. Well… I don’t know how to really put this, but… Continue reading

Avengers Assemble Is Hilarious

As a guy who has grown a new appreciation for Marvel Comics over the last few years, I decided that writing an article on a web series called Avengers Assemble, which I stumbled upon last year, seemed like a great thing to do. Continue reading

Marvel Heroes: All Known Info

Last Update: Tuesday, August 7th 2012

As Gazillion Entertainment quietly works away on their Marvel MMO titles Marvel Heroes, I decided to go ahead and gather as much info as I could on the project since I’m really quite interested in the Marvel universe in video game form.

General Information

So what is Marvel Heroes?
An MMO being worked on by Gazillion Entertainment that is said to play like an action RPG. Fans of Diablo or Torchlight will have a vague idea of what to expect while players of the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games should know exactly what is in store for them.

Who do we play as in the game?
Players will not create their own original heroes but will instead get to take on the role of their favourite Marvel protagonists. It’s been said that a huge variety of heroes will be playable in the game. Current characters that are known to be playable are as follows:

Black Panther
Black Widow
Captain America
Emma Frost
Human Torch
Iron Man
Ms. Marvel
Rocket Raccoon
Scarlet Witch
Squirrel Girl

Will there be character customization?
There will be customization in the form of alternate costumes, costume construction (not sure how this works yet), selectable powers, and items.

What areas are in the game?
Some of the revealed locations are Avengers Tower, Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown Manhattan, Mutant Town, Savage Land, and Xavier Institute. It has been noted by the developer that PvE locations are completely randomized similarly to areas in Diablo and Diablo II.

Is this a subscription based game?
Marvel Heroes will be 100% free to play, though there will be micro-transactions in the game which have not yet been elaborated on.

What platforms will the game be released for?
Marvel Heroes will be available exclusively for PC.

Carol Danvers’ New Role

So Carol Danvers, one of Marvel’s leading ladies, is getting a bit of a makeover this year.

As many know, Ms. Marvel’s backstory prominently features Captain Marvel, a character that I never particularly cared much for. His design was way too cheesy looking and his costume just ruined any appeal I could have found in him. It’s not uncommon to be turned away from a character because they look bad, and that was the case here.

Anyway, Carol Danvers always looked superb in her newer Ms. Marvel outfit. Aside from being a nice treat for male fans, it was always a very flashy and recognizable costume. There was no mistaking Ms. Marvel for anyone else. It defined her as much as Peter Parker’s Spider-Man costume or Tony Stark’s Iron Man armor.

Marvel has decided to follow a new story for Carol which will see her abandon her title of Ms. Marvel in favour of becoming the new Captain Marvel. This is where the makeover part comes in. Feast your eyes on her new look.

I’ll be extremely blunt and say that I don’t like it at all. She looks far less intimidating now as well as extremely generic. There are no parts to her new look that grabs you and holds onto you. The costume is as bland as they come and her new hairstyle just feels completely out of place after Carol sported long flowing hair for so long.

Seriously, why mess with a good thing? What was wrong with this (aside from ridiculously large breasts)?

Ah well, perhaps this will only be a temporary change. Only time will tell!
