Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (Review)

Capcom sure has taken a lot of crap from their fans in recent months. Hordes of angry consumers are upset that they have to buy Marvel vs Capcom 3 for a second time, but I’m not even going to get into that. This is after all my review for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Capcom has really proved their doubters wrong with this thorough upgrade to an already great fighting game.

Since I already wrote a review for the original release of Marvel vs Capcom 3, I won’t really rehash anything I said about the gameplay systems and what not so if you haven’t played Marvel vs Capcom 3 at all, read that review first for my thoughts on the overall structure and playability of the game. So what does Capcom bring to the table with the Ultimate update? Twelve new characters, ten new stages, a revamped main menu and UI, as well as extensive balancing and expanding of existing character move lists.

First, let’s talk about the returning characters. A lot of characters have brand new moves which will force their long time fans to come up with new strategies and ways to integrate the new moves into their play styles. Wolverine is perhaps my favourite example of this as he has gained an attack called “Swiss Cheese” in which he slices his claws repeatedly in front of him. It’s a lot like Super Skrull’s “Tenderizer” attack and is easy to execute (perhaps too easy). Various other characters have a new trick or two up their sleeves while almost every character has been rebalanced or tweaked to some degree. Most of the changes are fortunately minor and won’t really affect the gameplay any differently for regular players, though the hardcore tournament players will be obsessing over each and every small change due to even the slightest tweak being a potential game changer for specific characters on the tournament scene.

All characters now have six colours to choose from with most of them being new colour schemes that were not present in the original release. Captain America, Deadpool and Zero have some cool alternate colour schemes with Zero perhaps being the most interesting due to how his alternate colours pay homage to various characters in the Mega Man universe. In typical trollish Capcom fashion, Zero has received a brand new Mega Man X alternate colour scheme. This is sure to annoy some Mega Man fans, but they haven’t seen anything yet. Just wait until DLC costumes!

In terms of new characters, there’s a lot of really interesting variety. Twelve new faces have been added in total, six to each side. On Capcom’s side we have Firebrand, Frank West, Nemesis, Phoenix Wright, Strider Hiryu, and Vergil. Firebrand is a winged red demon who can flutter around the screen shooting fireballs and doing various dive attacks. He’s a little difficult to get used to, but he seems like a fairly pleasant surprise. It’s pretty possible for Firebrand to be anywhere at once, and I anticipate he’ll be the bane of a lot of inexperienced players online.

Frank West seems like a very enjoyable character. He appears to be very melee oriented due to starting off with his baseball bat and camera. The fun thing about Frank is that he can level himself up and gain new weapons. Each time Frank levels up, his melee weapon will change. What starts off as a mere baseball bat will eventually end up as much stronger combo weapons that we all know and love from Dead Rising.

Phoenix Wright is a real handful to use. His animations are confusing and it is difficult to determine what “moves” will hit your opponent. Phoenix Wright’s moves include throwing papers, sneezing (or coughing?), and falling down on his butt. While I appreciate the fact that Capcom included Phoenix Wright in the game to please his fans, he is an obvious joke character – but not in the good way. In my opinion, he is a waste of space in this game.

As a long time Marvel vs Capcom fan, I’ve been putting a lot of time into Strider Hiryu and am loving how he plays in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. He is fantastic at both short and long range and his teleports can really help mix things up quite a bit.

Nemesis and Vergil also seem quite handy and I’m sure each of them will be devastating in the right hands. Nemesis sort of reminds me of Venom while Vergil is sure to get a lot of play from Devil May Cry fans as well as anyone who prefers sword-based characters.

On the Marvel side we have Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Iron Fist, Nova, and Rocket Raccoon. I’ve really only taken to two Marvel characters and they are Ghost Rider and Nova. The rest, unfortunately, just don’t mesh with my play style at all which is a real shame since I was really looking forward to Iron Fist before release.

Ghost Rider is a long range virtuoso. His chain attacks often stretch all the way across the screen which makes it pretty hard to run from Ghost Rider, and his “eat chain” line that he spits out with each attack sounds great. I feel like I probably like Ghost Rider’s look and voice more than how he plays but, overall, he feels like a really well made fighter with his chain and fire attacks. Oh yeah, and we can’t ignore his hyper where he jumps on his bike and mows down the opponent!

Nova took a lot of heat before release with many fans saying that he just looked like a rehashing of other characters. Essentially, they thought he was a bland and boring version of Taskmaster. I was always looking forward to Nova and I’ve grown to really enjoy using him now that the game is in my hands. He does have a lot of close range rushdown attacks as demonstrated in his trailer, but he also has quite a bit of long range possibilities as well and I can’t wait to try him out against human opponents.

Now, the four characters I don’t like too much on the Marvel side? Doctor Strange seems very well made, but I can’t adapt to his floaty mechanics and, due to him hovering slightly above the ground, I haven’t had much luck using Strange against the likes of Amaterasu, Arthur, or Rocket Raccoon.

Hawkeye isn’t a bad character and his bows have excellent range and speed, but he feels seriously bland and uninspired to me. I like his theme music, but playing him is honestly a bore. The same applies to Iron Fist who I thought looked like a blast in his trailer, but after using him? He just felt hopelessly generic and is nothing but a Bruce Lee rip-off in this game. I understand that Iron Fist is an exceptionally talented martial artist, but the Bruce Lee vibes could have been taken down a few notches.

As for Rocket Racoon? I don’t have any problems with him and his quirky design amuses me, but his small size makes him a little harder for me to play with. It feels like Yoda from Soulcalibur IV all over again. He has plenty of range and can even use traps (think Trish), but Rocket Raccoon is pretty pitiful in my hands and I don’t want to comment on him very much because of this.

I suppose I could mention Galactus as a seventh Marvel character since we are able to play as him now. In Galactus Mode, you simply play as the planet devourer himself as you take down team after team of opponents. It’s fun for one or two matches, but after that it becomes a bit dull. Playing as Galactus is interesting, but it usually feels like a lot of effort on my part to even make him do anything. Capcom does not include a move list for him, so figuring out how to use Galactus is all guess work.

There are ten new stages in total, but they are all just “remixed” versions of existing stages. For example, Kattelox Island is now covered in snow and the SHIELD heli-carrier stage is now set during the day. Fortunately the remixed stages add just enough variety to be interesting to play on, though Demon Village Redux (essentially a black and white version of the original Demon Village) feels like a bit of a lazy rush job.

There aren’t too many other new features, though the ingame UI has been improved making it easier to tell which character is on point and how much life your teammates have left. You will also always know when you have X Factor available due to the electrified red X at the end of each player’s life bars. Another small thing worth mentioning for those who don’t play online much is that the computer AI has been made a little more difficult.

Overall, I feel like Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is a huge step in the right direction. All of the new characters (except Phoenix Wright) feel as if they belong in this game and all of them are probably pretty viable. While we’re sure to see a frightening number of Vergils online, at least we’re still going to see a little more diversity! If you were a fan of the original Marvel vs Capcom 3, then I would definitely suggest checking out the Ultimate upgrade. The game feels remarkably exciting and fresh again and the new characters add plenty of unpredictability to the fights.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is now official, baby! I’ve collected pretty much everything that you need to know. The full roster, new stages, gameplay videos, and changes/tweaks to characters and gameplay! This page will be updated whenever I can attain new info so, if you like what you see here, add this page to your bookmarks/favourites! Enjoy.

Basic Info

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be released in November 15th 2011 and will be on store shelves at a price of $39.99 without tax. There are twelve new characters (six Capcom, six Marvel) and eight new stages.

There will NOT be a downloadable version on the Live Marketplace or Playstation Store. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 will only be available on disc from online and physical retailers.

The Roster & Stages

There are twelve new characters. Six are from Capcom franchises and six are from the Marvel universe. Here they are.

As far as stages go, there are eight being added to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. They are, more or less, “remixed” versions of existing stages.

Asgard: Stage is now set during the night.
Kattelox Island: Is not covered in snow in a winter-themed setting.
Metro City: Destroyed by sentinels, features a “apprehended/slain” poster of past MvC characters.
SHIELD Carrier: Stage is now set during the day.
Training Stage: “Simulation” is off and now resembles the danger room shown at the game’s main menu.
Tricell Laboratory: The background area is now in ruin.


Game Modes

Ultimate Marvelvs Capcom 3 will feature a few new game modes which should prove enjoyable for those who complained about the vanilla version not having enough to do.

Galactus Mode: A game mode where Galactus is playable by a character. What I can tell, it’s just the standard Galactus fight at the end of arcade mode, but the big guy is now controlled by a player.

Heroes & Heralds Mode: A free post-launch DLC mode in which one side plays as heralds of Galactus using modified stats/techniques via combining cards that alter character performance (?).


Character Changes/Tweaks

As many people will be very interested in changes to their favourite characters from vanilla MvC3, this is a very important section! Please let me know if I have anything wrong, or if there are changes/tweaks that I haven’t found/been notified of. Remember, since UMvC3 is still in development, some of the changes below may not be final and most of what’s below has been gathered from third party sources and from watching streams/videos of UMvC3. Please let me know if any of this information is incorrect.

  • Demon Flip: A new command throw that Akuma has had in Street Fighter titles.
  • Tatsumaki Zankukyaku: When used as an assist, knocks enemy away rather than knocking them down.

  • Double Jump: Captain America seems to have a double jump now.
  • Shield Slash: The speed of this special has been increased dramatically.
  • Overall Mobility: Captain America, overall, appears to be a much faster character now.

  • Specials Startup: It is currently believed that the startup time on Chris’ specials are now shorter. This is not yet confirmed.

  • Combos: Dante’s basic combos do not seem to be executed in the same way or have simply been changed completely. No detailed info on this yet.

  • Quick Work: The distance/range of this attack is said to have been increased.

  • Flame Carpet: Pushes the opponent further away.

  • Uni-Beam: Overall startup and speed of attack increased and is now very spammable.

  • Attraction: A new special move that resembles an orb which drags the opponent towards him.
  • Dash: Magneto’s dash speed has been nerfed significantly.
  • Disruptor: Has had it’s speed reduced and is now slower overall.
  • Gravitation: A new special that Magneto can use to ground airborne opponents.
  • Repulsion: A new special move that resembles an orb which pushes the opponent away from him.

  • Damage Buff: It is currently believed that Morrigan’s overall damage has been slightly increased.
  • Finishing Shower: This hyper move has been had it’s startup and overall speed increased.

  • Air Limitations: Phoenix can now only perform one special in the air before dropping back to the ground.

  • Chargeable Hadoken: A hadoken move that can be charged (like Zero’s buster). Travels extremely fast at maximum charge.
  • Hadou Shoryuken: A brand new shoryuken that I have no current information on.
  • Shinku Hadoken: Can now reflect off of walls. It seems to reflect at a forty five degree angle.
  • Shinku Tatsumaki Senpukyaku: Now creates a large tornado when used.
  • Shoryuken: Ryu’s regular shoryuken can now be charged.

  • Sentinel Force Charge: Drones are deployed faster when used as an assist.

  • Overall Mobility: She-Hulk, overall, appears to be a much faster character now.

  • Death From Above: This new special attack is a damaging dropping attack from above similar to Super Skrull’s meteor smash special.

  • Damage Buff: Storm’s overall damage has been increased slightly.
  • New Wind Special: Storm can now pull and push the opponent her using winds.

  • Charge Stick: A new special where Taskmaster impales the enemy. Can easily be linked to Charging Star/Shield Charge.

  • Bonne Strike: This special now has a quicker recovery time.
  • Gustaffe Fire: The assist version of this has been nerfed. Tron Bonne is more vulnerable when called out to perform this assist attack.

  • New Dodge: Joe can now dodge/parry low attacks by doing a sort of “upwards dodge.” He has been seen dodging other attacks as well such as Berserker Slash.

  • Health Nerf: Wesker has been given a health nerf. Not sure how much less he has, but his health is said to be lower now.

  • Berserker Slash: This attack’s speed has been reduced.
  • Swiss Cheese: An oddly named new special move where Wolverine quickly slashes diagionally many times.

  • Rage Trigger: This hyper move is now faster overall.

  • Rekkoha: This special now covers more ground, as it has become wider.

Gameplay Changes/Tweaks

Expanded Online Features
It has been noted that a spectator mode has been added to the online component of the game. Players will no longer have to wait in a lobby for their turn and will now be able to watch other players in the lobby fight.

“Magic Pixel” Removed
In vanilla MvC3, it was possible for a character’s life to be completely depleted (visually, at least) yet still be alive and fighting. This graphical issue has been fixed and is not present in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

X-Factor Changes

  • New Properties: Can now be activated while airborne and the duration of X-Factor has been cut in half by approximately 50%. X Factor is now displayed prominently on the inside of the lifebars beside the timer.
  • New Appearance: Characters no longer glow red when X-Factor is active. Instead, they will become “shadows” of themselves with red centers. The shadow darkens when you attack.

General Aesthetic Changes/Tweaks

New Character Select & VS Screens
The character select and versus screens have each been given a very nice and sleek makeover. The character select screen firmly divides the two sides from one another. Note that you now change the colour of your characters by pressing L1/R1 to alternate through them, rather than pressing X, circle, square, and triangle.

The HUD Redesign
Lifebars have been overhauled. Your active character (the one you are playing as) is now displayed in the center of your team’s lifebars. Your active character’s lifebar is also larger than the others. There is also a new X-Factor display on the inside of the lifebar HUD.

Super meters have been overhauled as well. They do not function differently and have simply been given a new appearance that seems to be more comic book inspired than the old meters.

New Win Screen
The win screen has received a new look. Your three characters are given equal treatment on the screen and the stage you fought on is displayed in the back rather than in it’s own little window in the corner.

Character Voices
When two of your characters die and your third and final character leaps into the fight, they will shout out a line that many people have taken to calling the last man standing line. For example, if Hawkeye is your only character left, he will say “Looks like it’s just me!” when he jumps into the fight.

There are also new lines that characters will say to each other before and after fights. For example, if the last character on the opposing team is Hawkeye and you defeat him with Taskmaster, he will say something similar to, “Ha! Thanks for the archery lesson, William Tell!”

Remixed Music Tracks
Various music tracks will be remixed. Currently it is known that the victory theme has been remixed as a new version of it can be heard at the end of the gameplay videos. Also, the character select theme has been remixed and is more “rockish” than before.

There are currently three new costume packs that are slated to be released in conjunction with Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

"Femme Fatale" Pack: Chun-Li, Morrigan, Storm, X-23.
"New Age of Heroes" Pack: Akuma, Dr. Doom, Sentinel, Strider Hiryu
"Villains" Pack: Crimson Viper, MODOK, Super Skrull, Wesker.

Vanilla DLC Compatibility
Downloadable content purchased for the original Marvel vs Capcom 3 will be compatible with the Ultimate version. If you purchased Jill and Shuma-Gorath in the original version, you will still have them when you boot up Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. No DLC purchases will have to be repeated.

No Mega Man/Females
Twelve new characters and none of them are female. This is pretty weird by fighting game standards. Apparently a raccoon was deemed more important than a woman. There is also no sign of a Mega Man character. This is pretty shocking since he was the most demanded Capcom character by fans. It is pretty likely that, if we get DLC characters again, we can probably expect a Marvel girl and Mega Man X for Capcom to be released in the same manner as Jill and Shuma-Gorath. They may even be offered as special edition bonuses in much the same way as the vanilla DLC characters (assuming we even get a special edition this time).

Most Requested Marvel Vs Capcom 3 DLC Characters

After digging through the forum communities at Capcom Unity, GameFAQs, and Shoryuken for several days, I was able to compile each of their “request DLC characters” topics into a single handy list. In their topics, they asked users to vote for three Capcom characters and three Marvel characters that they would like to see added to Marvel Vs Capcom 3 as DLC.

The list I made from combining the topics from the three sites contains votes from HUNDREDS of users. With so many possible characters for hundreds of people to choose from (over 300 were named), every single one in this top 25 should be viewed as a fan favourite, or as a character that should receive careful consideration from Capcom to join Jill and Shuma-Gorath on the DLC roster.

Below are the top 25 requested characters according to the results of all three sites combined as of January 10, 2010.

Keep in mind that the three sites are still continuing their DLC request topics for another 10 to 15 days each. I would imagine that the final results from all sites are likely to be mostly the same as what’s below, only with higher numbers.

Feb. 20, 2011 Update: It’s been several weeks and the numbers below have risen substantially, with the highest voted characters having about 1600 votes. I won’t bother tallying them up again, since I am aware that the results would not change significantly from 1st to 15th. While the number of votes listed below are outdated, the positions of the characters are not.



It’s a bit of a shock that Street Fighter’s supreme bad dude fills in the last slot of the top 25 requested character list. Many folks online have been hoping dearly for more Capcom villains, since the Marvel side has a substantial amount. It makes some sense that everyone’s favourite dictator is so low though. After all, his moveset isn’t really fitting for the Marvel Vs Capcom sort of gameplay.


Back in the 1990s when the X-Men animated cartoon aired each Saturday, Rogue was a pretty big deal and she was probably on the minds of a lot of little boys who were just entering puberty. In this day and age, Rogue’s relevance is much lower, but she is still a fan favourite. She was an enjoyable character in Marvel Vs Capcom 2, so it makes sense to see that some fans want her back.


Street Fighter’s sex appeal. Marvel Vs Capcom 3 looks like it will probably have enough female characters aimed to give teen boys dirty thoughts, and with Street Fighter’s leading lady Chun-Li already on the roster, Cammy’s inclusion seems pretty unlikely. Still, she would fit the gameplay of Marvel Vs Capcom 3 very well. It seems that a few dozen people already knew this, though.


Originally presumed to be in the game’s final roster, it is looking extremely unlikely that Frank West will appear in Marvel Vs Capcom 3 as anything other than DLC. Considering the fact that Capcom seems to think that western gamers are obsessed with Frank, it is unusual that he has been relegated to being nothing more than a character who people wish make it in as DLC. What a crumby way to treat a guy who has covered wars, Capcom.


I personally know nothing about this Marvel character, and I don’t really want to either. The fact that people want her in astounds me. What is the appeal? There’s nothing I can really say about this character, so next up is…


The prime villain of the Mega Man X series. A lot of fans want Sigma in since Capcom’s side lacks villains and Sigma can easily fit into a game like this. Sigma has appeared in pretty much every Mega Man X game there is, and has had countless different bodies and forms. There is so much possibility to work with here, and Capcom would probably be doing the game a huge favour by including this versatile Maverick villain.


Marvel Vs Capcom 3 needs more giant muscle-freaks. The Hulk fits the bill and Haggar is deemed such a character by crazed fans, but those two are not enough. The seventy two people who said “Juggernaut!” know very well that this game needs another mammoth character, and Juggernaut would do nicely. He was pretty fun in the previous Marvel Vs Capcom game. This brute works great in fighting games such as this. Capcom should definitely consider adding him.


Unfortunately I do not know much about Iron Fist, though my feelings towards him are definitely better than how I feel about Squirrel Girl. Iron Fist has an interesting design and I can definitely see a character like this working in Marvel Vs Capcom 3. He seems to have a solid fanbase, and adding this character should definitely please the Marvel readers.


Bass.EXE comes from the Mega Man Battle Network games. I checked them out once and felt incredibly underwhelmed, and I don’t think that I got a chance to see this character in action. Still, the original Bass from classic Mega Man was a great character, so I don’t see how this incarnation of him could be any worse, especially since he received a good number of votes.


Here’s a name that not many people mentioned for the longest time when discussing Marvel Vs Capcom 3’s roster or DLC characters. However, all that changed when a fake reveal picture of Green Goblin as a character emerged on Facebook. Since then, he has been on the tongues of many people. It’s not hard to imagine why, since Green Goblin is by far Spider-Man’s greatest rival ever. Green Goblin would be a solid addition to the cast.


One of the protagonists from Cyberbots, Jin is a Marvel Vs Capcom veteran after being a playable character in the first two games. He has a tremendously solid fanbase, and very few people seem to outright dislike the character. Jin is extremely off the wall and a blast to play as. Also, “BLOOOODIAAAA!” His exclusion is a puzzling one, as he was a very original character. Hopefully Capcom will bring Jin back to his fans.


The most requested Darkstalkers character after Felicia and Morrigan, who are both in the game. With Hsien-Ko expected to be announced soon, it makes Jon Talbain’s exclusion very painful. While a lot of people call him a “generic werewolf” and other things, it is impossible to overlook how his quick fighting style would fit the Marvel Vs Capcom gameplay brilliantly.


And now we break 100 votes per character with another veteran character, Captain Commando! Once upon a time, this guy was Capcom’s mascot. When he was added to Marvel Vs Capcom, he earned a brand new fanbase. I consider myself among those fans, and mained Captain Commando in the previous two Marvel Vs Capcoms. His exclusion has me incredibly bummed out. I’m glad that 100 people want him in. The 101st voter was me, you see.


After being added to the Vs series once again in Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Cyclops quickly re-established himself as a fantastic character in a fighting game. His optic blast was great for punishing new players, as well as those who just can’t close gaps. Considering that Cyclops is essentially the leader of the X-Men and has many fans, his exclusion is very peculiar.


The Marvel character I would like to see added the most! Ms. Marvel has a whole slew of interesting powers and has a very attractive design without looking overly slutty. Marvel could probably do with one or two more female characters on their side of the roster to counter Capcom’s large number of females. Ms. Marvel would be a great choice to balance the roster out.


I know of Dr. Strange and have seen him many times in the media and in pictures, but I’ve never really checked him out at all. Therefore I don’t know as much as I would like to about this character, but I am aware that he has tons of fans. I don’t even follow Dr. Strange and I recognize him, so he’s pretty iconic. Adding an iconic face to the roster would be a smart move.


Pretty much the same as Dr. Strange. An iconic character that I know very little about. I didn’t even watch the supposedly horrendous Nicholas Cage movie. I would imagine that Ghost Rider would be a little difficult to implement though, due to his bike.


The protagonist from the successful PS2 action game God Hand, Gene is a character that many fans are clammering for. Before I saw quite a few people suggest this guy for the roster, I had no idea who he was, and I thought “God Hand” was just a character in the PS1 fighter Ehrgeiz. Well, I was definitely wrong on that one. After checking out a few God Hand videos and such, I can see why a few people would want this guy in.


Surely a face that is familiar to those who have played Devil May Cry. I, unfortunately, never have. That may sound surprising, but I mostly skipped over the PS2 in favour of the Gamecube (don’t shoot me, please). I’m sure that Vergil must be pretty awesome though, since he is from the action packed Devil May Cry series.


To be honest, and even though I voted for her myself, I’m surprised to see Psylocke make it so high and I had no idea that she was so popular. I don’t really read comics and always thought that Psylocke was just one of those random underdog characters. After trying Psylocke out in Marvel Vs Capcom 2, I grew to love her fighting style and her moveset. In my eyes, she would definitely be a welcome addition to the third installment.


It looks like, after two Vs games with classic Mega Man, fans have gotten sick of him. X has been requested almost non-stop since the game was announced. It seems that everyone wants X in over classic Mega Man. I suppose I can understand why, as X’s power-ups are much more varied and interesting. His default armor also has many more interesting powers that classic Mega Man does not have. From a gameplay perspective, X would be vastly superior to classic Mega Man.


I want to understand this Phoenix Wright craze, I honestly do. Niitsuma stated that Phoenix Wright wasn’t in because there is nothing to base a moveset on for him. He literally does not fit this sort of game at all. What is he going to do, smack people with briefcases? Shout “Objection!” speech bubbles that float around and damage opponents? The fact that Marvel’s Phoenix is also acts as a strke against Wright since their names are so similar.


One of the most iconic Spider-Man villains and a fan favourite veteran from the past two Marvel Vs Capcom games. Venom has always been a huge blast to play as, and his incredibly unpredictable moveset that can punish players from across the screen has always been full of awesome attacks. The only reason why I think Venom may never appear in Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is the fact that he is always drastically changing shape. That’s gotta take a toll on the RAM.


The most requested Marvel character, and for good reason. Gambit has appeared in more Capcom fighting games than you can shake a stick at, and was incredibly fun to use in the previous Marvel Vs Capcom games. As one of my main characters, his exclusion makes me feel pretty upset. Still, with so many people begging for him to be DLC, there is still hope for everyone’s favourite Cajun!


And here he is. Come on, everyone probably saw this coming, right? Strider Hiryu’s popularity reached incredible heights with the original Marvel Vs Capcom. I instantly took a liking to the versatile moveset and awesome hyper combos that came along with Hiryu. Out of all the characters on this list, his exclusion from Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is the biggest shocker since after Ryu, Spider-Man and Wolverine, Hiryu is the face of Marvel Vs Capcom. What gives, Capcom?


And here’s another little treat. Characters that I didn’t include in the top 25 and the number of votes they received. I ignored all votes from Akuma, Hsien-Ko, Sentinel, and Taskmaster since they are presumed to be the final four characters and are expected to be revealed this month sometime. None of those four characters even received enough votes to make it into the following list anyway. I assume that they didn’t receive many votes because people feel pretty sure about their probable inclusions.

So what does this list tell us?
It tells us that Capcom had better add Strider Hiryu unless they want to deal with rioting fans! The amount of support behind Hiryu for DLC is really incredible. It’s also apparent that there is a lot of respect for the other MvC1 vets, Captain Commando and Jin Saotome. The low number of votes for Roll should, hopefully, be a sign to Capcom that we just don’t want her in the Vs games anymore.

The bottom line? Add Strider Hiryu as DLC. Licensing issues be damned, it must be done!

Dead Rising 2/Sonic 4 First Impressions

So I’m playing two games at once right now, and they are Dead Rising 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1. These two games couldn’t be any more unlike one another, and this is reflected in my feelings towards them so far after clocking about two hours in Dead Rising 2, and about an hour and a half in Sonic 4.


I never played the original Dead Rising since I do not have a 360, so I wasn’t able to experience the exploits of Frank West. That did not stop me from wanting to check out the sequel, though.

Dead Rising 2 uses the Games for Windows or Windows Live sign-in crap, which plagues so many other PC games these days. I was a little upset to see that in here, but what really irked me was the lack of any sort of key configuration options, and apparently the only gamepads that this game has support for are 360 ones for the PC. I had to go into an ini file and remap the keys manually, which was fairly annoying. It took me about an hour before I was truly happy with the controls.

The gameplay so far has me hooked, and I can’t really fault it much. My only gripe is having to find Zombrex for Chuck’s daughter. I don’t even know where to start looking since I always have, literally, dozens of zombies lumbering after me at once. Taking the zombies down is a lot of fun, and is even downright gruesome in a few instances. If you have a fire axe, you can slice a zombie in half – and I mean VERTICALLY, so from the head and down. Ouch.

The characters are pretty good. Katey (Chuck’s daughter) isn’t too interesting, but the rest of the supporting cast is great so far. Rebecca is pretty much the most blatant use of sex appeal I’ve ever seen in a video game of this kind, but she’s also a well developed character personality-wise, so she has the looks and the character. Sullivan is cool too, I definitely like his no nonsense approach to things as he manages the safehouse/shelter. I’ve only talked to him a few times and he’s already changed his feelings towards Chuck twice. I like this guy.

I haven’t played the game enough to write a review, that’s for sure. Still coming to grips with a lot of things in Dead Rising 2, but I predict a pretty good score for it.


A new Sonic game in the original series, what’s not to like? Unfortunately, a lot. The game isn’t that bad, don’t be misled by what I just said. The problem with Sonic 4 is that it feels like the developers don’t know how to design Sonic levels anymore.

The Splash Hill levels were pretty decent, but they felt far too large and I never really knew how far into the stages I was. There are too many routes and secret passages, and it’s just far too overwhelming. Big levels are good in a lot of instances, but these levels are just too big.

I actually felt like the casino stages were really frustrating. Far too many stupid gimmicky props and such, and a few things, such as the cannons that shoot you around, really annoyed me. I felt that, in the casino stages, I was mostly just being pushed through the levels by the huge abundance of springs and other devices that would propel Sonic forward. Honestly, it’s a little questionable when you barely even have to press any buttons to progress through a level. In the casino levels, the game progressed Sonic for you.

The ruin levels seem promising so far, but I’ve only played the first one. It was a little Indiana Jones-esque, which I actually enjoyed. In a few instances, I had to flee from rolling boulders and then ride smaller boulders over bottomless pits. With the slower pace and the game not relying on springs and such to shoot me forward ALL THE DAMN TIME, the first ruin level was actually pretty enjoyable.

Aside from the weird level design and the game’s reliance on devices that constantly shoot you around the level, the other thing I did not like is the placement of enemies. A lot of them are positioned in places where, unless you’ve already played the level and know what’s coming, you’re going to get hit and lose all of your rings. A few enemies come out of absolutely nowhere and are positioned in spots where you are destined to hit them unless you are a remarkably fast thinker and can take them out in half a second. Unlikely.

It’s still early days for Sonic 4, so my feelings may change. At the moment, I’m going to say that this game is just fairly average overall. Despite it’s flaws, it is still fun. It’s just not memorable.

Rumoured Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Leaks

Apparently somebody at iPlayWinner posted the following information, only to have it deleted. Usually information is deleted when it’s legit, but let’s not jump to conclusions.

Here is the deleted post from iPlayWinner.

“First off, Capcom is doing an INCREDIBLE job at keeping this game close to their chest. I don’t know much, but what I DO know I’ll be more than glad to tell you. No, I don’t work for Capcom, and neither do any friends or relatives — but there are other outlets in the industry for this sort of information.

42 is indeed the magic number for playable characters.

DLC characters won’t be happening, but Capcom is being tight-lipped on this for the time being. If the game launches as successfully as planned, you can definitely expect a significant retail update within a year including a handful of new characters.

March 22 is the tentative North American release date for the time being with Europe and Japan coming soon after. This can — and probably will — change, but development ends in February.

Starting in November, a new character will be revealed on a weekly basis on Capcom-Unity, Marvel.com and the Japanese site all the way until early March. There will be a Holiday break in late December/early January without any updates.

I know you guys like specifics, so I’ll leave you with the “good stuff.”

Bison and Viper are the final Street Fighter characters.
Strider is back.
Haggar is finally a playable character.
Classic Mega Man is back.
Zero is back from TVC.
Roll is NOT a playable character.

Is it real? Let’s wait and see. If it is, then the weekly character reveal would take us up until the release date, which is interesting.

This would also leave just two Capcom character unrevealed. Hmmm… Frank West and another unknown character, maybe? Perhaps Captain Commando or Jin Saotome, just to please the MvC1 and MvC2 veterans?

We will know for sure if this is true come November, since the reveals will supposedly start then. Stay tuned!

My MvC3 Roster Predictions

With Gamescom starting up in four days, and Capcom confirming that new MvC3 characters will be shown off at the event, I think it’s time to throw out my roster predictions.

At the moment, I believe that we have forty percent of the final roster revealed. VS games typically have large rosters, so it should be expected that MvC3 will be no different. It has been stated that the game will have “at least” thirty characters. I’ve listed thirty six.

Capcom has indicated that, at Gamescom, they will reveal some characters that permeate a “classic MvC aura.” This implies that few new characters will be shown off at Gamescom, if any. It looks likely that we’ll be seeing characters from MvC1 and MvC2 being revealed.

So, I’ve taken this possibility into account and have formed my own roster that I’d love to see. I’ve separated the confirmed characters from unconfirmed below. Please not that the characters in the “my guesses” portion of the article are not confirmed. A few of them are extremely likely (Viewtiful Joe, for example) while two or three are probably not too likely to appear. Anyhow, here are the characters who have been revealed.

So that’s the sixteen characters revealed so far. With my ideal roster size being thirty six, it leaves twenty open slots. Below are my guesses. Some characters below are being rumoured to be in by almost everybody (Frank West, Spiderman) while others aren’t really being mentioned by anyone and are just my personal preferences (Alex, Mister Sinister).

Mega Man X – There is always a Mega Man in VS games. Fans are begging for X.
Strider Hiryu – One of the MvC mainstays.
Viewtiful Joe – Basically confirmed. His silhouette is visible.
Zangief – MvC needs a grappler. Was in MvC2.
Zero – Appearance in TvC increases his chances of being in MvC3.

MARVEL
Cyclops – Popular Marvel character. Was in MvC2.
Iceman – Well known X-Men character. Was in MvC2.
Magneto – The face of X-Men villains. Was in MvC2.
Mister Sinister – Fairly well known X-Men villain. Why not?
Morbius – Peculiar Spiderman villain. A vampiric character would be interesting.
Nightcrawler – Fairly popular. His abilities would make him pretty unique.
Psylocke – Mandatory female character. Was in MvC1 as assist, and playable in MvC2.
Spiderman – Basically confirmed. Also a MvC mainstay.
Storm – Mandatory female character. Was in MvC1 as assist, and playable in MvC2.
War Machine – Beloved character from the previous two MvC titles.


I would have loved to add a Breath of Fire representative to the list since I love the series to death, but let’s be realistic. Capcom has never even had anything vaguely related to Breath of Fire in any MvC game yet. No assists, characters in stage backgrounds, or anything. Face it, two foot tall robots that nobody likes stand more of a chance.

I managed to correctly guess the entire SSF4 roster (I predicted the additions of Dee Jay, T. Hawk, Adon, Cody, Guy, Dudley, Ibuki, Makoto, and two new characters) so let’s see if my brain is still synchronized with Capcom’s creative minds.

Thirty six characters and twenty unconfirmed characters I’ve guessed.

Let’s see how many I get right!
