Sony’s Title Fight

So apparently there is a wild rumour floating around that Sony is gearing up to make a Smash Bros. styled game using characters that are exclusive to Sony consoles. I’m already reading a lot of people saying it sounds like an awful idea that would never work, but why is this? Pretty sure the reaction to the original Smash Bros. was the same.

Sony has a lot of characters to pick from. Let’s look over the list of noteworthy Sony characters.

Clank (Ratchet & Clank)
Cole (Infamous)
Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot, though this entry is debatable)
Fat Princess (Fat Princess)
Jak (Jak & Daxter)
Kratos (God of War)
Mr. Grimm (Twisted Metal)
Nathan Drake (Uncharted)
Parappa (Parappa the Rapper)
Ratchet (Ratchet & Clank)
Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet)
Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper)
Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid, though this entry is debatable)
Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal)
Tag (ModNation Racers)

As for games or series that Sony could potentially draw from? Provided that certain developers would allow Sony to use their characters, it’s a big list. Here we go…

3D Dot Game Heroes
Alundra
Ape Escape
Bushido Blade
Chrono Cross
Crash Bandicoot
Devil May Cry
Disgaea
Dino Crisis
Ehrgeiz
Fat Princess
Final Fantasy (VII through X)
Folklore
Heavenly Sword
God Hand
God of War
Heavy Rain
Ico
Infamous
Jak & Daxter
Jet Moto
Killzone
LittleBigPlanet
LocoRoco
Metal Gear Solid
ModNation Racers
Monster Hunter
Mortal Kombat (due to partnership with Warner Bros.)
Pandemonium
Parappa the Rapper
Patapon
Ratchet & Clank
Resistance
Shadow of the Colossus
Sly Cooper
Spyro the Dragon
Syphon Filter
Tomba
Twisted Metal
Uncharted
UmJammer Lammy
Valkyria Chronicles
White Knight Chronicles

There are probably even a dozen more (at least) series that they could draw on for stages. An Intelligent Cube stage would be fun, wouldn’t it? Imagine seeing a bizarre mismatch between Sackboy and Kratos with giant blocks rolling around and almost squishing the two.

Sony has A LOT of material to draw on for this idea. I’m not saying that it would necessarily succeed, but there is no shortage of material for them to work with. Given how big and powerful Sony is, I wouldn’t doubt that they’d be able to wrestle a few characters away from Capcom or Square-Enix to include. Would Sony’s Smash Bros. be a very diverse game? There’s no question. Would it be a good game? Let’s wait and see.

UPDATE: An image of Sweet Teeth has leaked! The name of the game is also apparently Title Fight and will be released in 2012 sometime.
